There is a verse in Paul’s first letter to Timothy that most modern Christians have never heard preached — and yet it may be one of the most directly relevant passages in all of Scripture to the age we are living in.

“O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: which some professing have erred concerning the faith” (1 Timothy 6:20-21).

Science falsely so called.

Paul is not attacking science. He is not dismissing the human capacity for observation, investigation, and discovery. What he is warning against is a specific phenomenon — claims that dress themselves in the authority of science while actually functioning as something else entirely. Philosophical assumptions. Ideological agendas. Materialist worldviews that preclude supernatural conclusions before the investigation has even begun. These are not science — they are the oppositions of science falsely so called. And professing them, Paul says, has caused some to err concerning the faith.

That warning is as urgent today as it was in the first century — perhaps more so. Because the modern world has elevated Science — capitalized, institutionalized, and largely beyond question — to the status of the highest authority in human knowledge. And when any institution achieves that status, the temptation to abuse it becomes irresistible.

What Science Actually Is — and Is Not

Before we can think biblically about the relationship between science and Scripture, we need to recover a clear understanding of what science actually is — stripped of the cultural authority it has been assigned.

Science, properly understood, is a method. It is a systematic process of observation, hypothesis formation, experimentation, and conclusion — designed to produce reliable knowledge about the physical world by testing claims against repeatable evidence. Within its proper domain, it is extraordinarily useful. The advances in medicine, engineering, agriculture, and technology that have shaped the modern world are genuine achievements of the scientific method applied carefully and honestly.

But the scientific method has a domain — and it is limited to the physical, the observable, and the repeatable. It cannot tell you whether God exists, because God is not a physical phenomenon subject to laboratory testing. It cannot tell you the meaning of human life, because meaning is not a measurable quantity. It cannot tell you what is morally right or wrong, because moral reality does not appear in a test tube.

The moment science steps outside its proper domain — the moment it begins making authoritative pronouncements about origins, about ultimate reality, about human identity, about morality — it has ceased to be science and become philosophy. Or ideology. Or, in Paul’s language, science falsely so called.

“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

There are things God has revealed — in His Word, sufficient and complete. And there are secret things — matters beyond human investigation, known fully only to God. Wisdom knows the difference between the two. The scientist who insists that the domain of the observable encompasses all of reality has not made a scientific claim. He has made a philosophical one — and a deeply presumptuous one at that.

Three Claims of Science Falsely So Called

The modern world presents several large-scale scientific narratives that have achieved the status of unchallengeable consensus — and that directly contradict the clear teaching of Scripture. Each deserves examination through the lens of 1 Timothy 6:20.

Evolution and the Origin of Life

The theory of macroevolution — that all life on earth descended from a common ancestor through random mutation and natural selection over billions of years — is presented as settled scientific fact, beyond reasonable dispute, and held by every credible scientist.

But examine its claims against Scripture and the examination does not go well for the theory.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Not a process. Not an accident. A creation — by a Creator, with intention, authority, and power. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). Man is not the product of an undirected process that began with primordial chemistry. Man is the deliberate creation of a personal God, made in His image, endowed with dignity that no evolutionary process can confer and no cultural consensus can remove.

The believer who accepts macroevolution as compatible with Scripture has not reconciled faith and science. They have allowed a philosophical framework — materialism, the assumption that physical processes are the only reality — to reinterpret the clear testimony of the Word. That is not science informing theology. That is ideology displacing Scripture.

Gender Ideology and the Nature of Humanity

The claim that biological sex is separate from gender identity — that a person can be born in the wrong body, that sex is assigned rather than observed, that the categories of male and female are social constructs rather than biological and creational realities — is presented as settled science, backed by the consensus of medical and psychological institutions.

But the Word of God could not be clearer: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27). Male and female — created, not assigned, not constructed, not chosen. The binary of male and female is not a cultural artifact. It is a creational reality, established by God at the foundation of human existence, and confirmed by Jesus Himself: “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female?” (Matthew 19:4).

The claim that this binary is a social construct is not a scientific finding. It is an ideological assertion — one that requires the rejection of observable biological reality, the reinterpretation of thousands of years of human experience, and the direct contradiction of the Word of God. It is, in Paul’s language, science falsely so called.

Scientism and the Exclusion of God

Perhaps the most pervasive form of science falsely so called is not a specific theory but a worldview — scientism, the philosophical position that science is the only reliable path to truth and that any claim not verifiable by the scientific method is meaningless or false.

This is not a scientific conclusion — it is a philosophical presupposition that precedes and shapes all subsequent investigation. It rules God out of bounds before the conversation begins. And because it is dressed in the authority of science, it passes as objective neutrality when it is actually the most philosophically committed position in the room.

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1). The psalmist does not say the fool lacks intelligence or education. Fools can be brilliant and credentialed. What the fool lacks is the beginning of wisdom — “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). A scientific method that excludes the fear of the LORD as its starting point has not achieved objectivity. It has simply chosen a different set of unexamined assumptions.

The Believer’s Response

The biblical believer does not have to choose between faith and genuine science. The God who wrote the Word also made the world — and there is no ultimate conflict between them. What genuine scientific investigation discovers about the created order can only confirm the glory of the One who created it.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” (Psalm 19:1).

The conflict is not between faith and science. It is between Scripture and scientism — between the Word of God and a philosophical framework that has borrowed the authority of the scientific method to make pronouncements it has no right to make.

The believing response is not anti-intellectual retreat but confident, informed, biblically grounded engagement. It means distinguishing between what the scientific method has actually demonstrated and what has been assumed, asserted, or ideologically imposed under the cover of scientific authority. It means holding the Word as the supreme standard — not because the believer is afraid of evidence, but because the believer knows that all genuine evidence, rightly interpreted, will ultimately confirm the testimony of the God who does not lie.

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

The creation testifies. The Word confirms. The two do not contradict — because they have the same Author.

Keep what is committed to your trust. Avoid the oppositions of science falsely so called. And do not let the cultural authority of institutional consensus displace the final authority of the Word of God.

Paul’s warning to Timothy is two thousand years old.

It has never been more needed.
