Thirty days. The series opened with Jude 3, contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Today it closes where Jude closes. The epistle that named the task ends with the doxology that grounds it.
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen” (Jude 24-25). The argument of thirty days has been made. The definition. The history. The mechanism. The straw men. The critics. The positive vision. The call. The canon’s foundational distinction.
But the argument was never the point. The argument was always in service of the doxology. The contending was always in service of the one who keeps. The Biblicism conviction, I will trust the Word of God alone, is not an end in itself. It is the posture from which the Word does its work: forming, correcting, illuminating, transforming, keeping. Presenting faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.
Glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. To the only wise God our Saviour. Amen.
What Thirty Days Have Established
The claim this series will not walk back:
The sixty-six canonical books of Scripture are the supreme, final, infallible, sufficient, and self-interpreting authority in all matters of Christian faith and practice. Every human institution, tradition, creed, confession, council, denomination, and theological system is evaluated by the Scripture it claims to serve, accountable to the Scripture it claims to represent, and subject to correction by the Scripture it treats as its authority. No exceptions.
Thirty days have established this claim from:
History — Luther at Worms, Calvin in the Institutes‘ preface, Tyndale in his translation and death, Zwingli at Zurich, Knox before the Scottish crown. The Reformers were Biblicists. The confessionalist tradition that uses their legacy to dismiss the position they held has departed from its own founders.
Structure — The mechanism of four stages. The Protestant Magisterium: formally fallible, functionally infallible. The Westminster Confession evaluated by its own standard: WCF 1.10 declares the supreme judge is the Holy Spirit speaking in Scripture; WCF 31.3 declares all synods may err; WCF 1.6 declares nothing is to be added, traditions of men included.
Evidence — The naivety charge answered, the anarchy charge answered, the anti-tradition charge answered. Sproul, Horton, Vanhoozer, Williams, engaged directly, respected precisely, answered clearly.
Vision — The Berean church described. Two movements, both together, every day: received with readiness, searched the Scriptures daily. The communities practicing this, in China, in the Global South, in the expository preaching fellowships, are the communities with a future.
The foundational distinction — the church recognized the canon, it did not create it. The Word settled in heaven before any council met on earth. Intrinsic authority, Spirit-attested, community-recognized.
The argument is complete. And it ends, as every genuine theological argument must end, not in triumphalism but in doxology. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.
