We come to the last of the dangerous translations, and the most openly doctrinal of them all. Every text in this section departed from the faithful stream in its own way, the Mirror through mysticism, Dake through his notes, The Message through paraphrase, the Passion Translation through a claimed vision. The New World Translation departs in the most systematic way possible: it was, in effect, translated backward. The conclusions came first, and the text was produced to fit them.

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book” (Revelation 22:18).

This is the final warning of Scripture, and no translation in modern history embodies what it warns against more literally. The New World Translation does not merely lean or soften, it adds. It inserts a word into the deity passages that appears in no manuscript. It inserts “Jehovah” into the New Testament 237 times where no Greek manuscript contains it. It adds an indefinite article to the most famous verse about Christ’s deity. Revelation 22:18 was written for exactly this: a text handed to millions as the Word of God, with words added that God did not breathe out.

Translated Backward

The New World Translation is the official Bible of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, produced and controlled by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, the organizational authority for roughly eight million Witnesses worldwide. Published in stages from 1950 to 1961, revised in 1984 and 2013, it is presented by the Watch Tower as the most accurate translation available, superior even to the KJV, NIV, and ESV.

But it stands apart from every other translation ever produced by the Christian church in one disqualifying respect: the theological conclusions were fixed before the translation began, and the translation was then produced to support them. This is not a disputed accusation. It is visible in the text itself, in the specific, consistent pattern of its departures, confirmed by former Watch Tower scholars, and quietly acknowledged by the extraordinary secrecy under which it was made. Every other dangerous text in this series at least began with the text and drifted. The NWT began with the doctrine and built a text around it.

The Secret Committee

Every reputable translation in history was produced by identifiable scholars whose credentials and methods are publicly accountable. The KJV translators are named, their biographies documented, their rules preserved. The NIV and Nestle-Aland committees are publicly constituted. Scholarly accountability requires that the people making translation decisions be identifiable and open to peer review.

The New World Translation was produced by a committee whose members were not publicly identified for decades. The Watch Tower claimed anonymity kept the work from being credited to individuals. In practice, it prevented scholarly review of the translators’ qualifications, and when the committee’s composition eventually became known, that concern proved well founded. The members included Frederick Franz, the Watch Tower’s fourth president and the man most responsible for the Greek New Testament. Franz claimed to have studied Greek at university, but in a 1954 Scottish court case, the Douglas Walsh trial, where Watch Tower doctrine was examined under oath, he was tested on basic Greek and performed poorly. Beyond credentials, every committee member was a Watch Tower loyalist whose conclusions were fixed by institutional teaching before they ever opened a lexicon. The result was entirely predictable: a translation that reflects Watch Tower theology at every point where that theology collides with the standard rendering of the Greek and Hebrew.

John 1:1 — the Most Refuted Verse in Translation History

The NWT’s rendering of John 1:1 is the single most debated and most thoroughly refuted translation choice ever made. The Greek, kai theos ēn ho logos, means and the Word was God. Every major Greek scholar across every tradition, including secular and non-Christian scholars, renders it some version of “the Word was God.”

The NWT renders it: “and the Word was a god.”

That inserted indefinite article, a god, has no grammatical justification. The Watch Tower defends it by pointing to the absence of the Greek definite article before theos in the clause, arguing that anarthrous theos should be “a god.” But this exact construction, an anarthrous predicate nominative preceding the verb, is precisely what the standard reference grammars address, and they confirm it neither requires nor suggests an indefinite article. Dr. Bruce Metzger, the dean of twentieth-century textual scholarship and no conservative partisan, declared the rendering without grammatical justification. Dr. Julius Mantey, one of the foremost Greek grammarians of the century, wrote to the Watch Tower demanding they stop citing his grammar in their defense, calling their rendering “a shocking mistranslation” and their use of his work “a gross distortion of the facts.” The “a god” reading is not a translation of the Greek. It is a doctrine, that Christ is a created being, inserted into the text through an argument no credentialed Greek scholar outside the Watch Tower accepts.

237 Insertions With No Manuscript Behind Them

The NWT inserts the word “Jehovah” into the New Testament 237 times, in places where the Greek reads kyrios (Lord) or theos (God). Here is the fact that settles it: among more than five thousand surviving Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, not one reads “Jehovah” anywhere, not in any century, any region, any manuscript family.

The Watch Tower justifies the insertions by claiming the originals must have contained the divine name, and that early scribes systematically removed it. There is no manuscript evidence for this, no letter, no church record, no scribal note documenting any such removal. The claim is invented to license the insertion. And its purpose is devastating to the doctrine of Christ. The New Testament writers repeatedly take Old Testament passages about YHWH and apply them to Jesus, identifying Him with the God of Israel. Paul quotes Joel, whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be saved, and applies it to confessing Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:13). He echoes Isaiah’s declaration that every knee will bow to YHWH and applies it to Jesus (Philippians 2:10-11). When the NWT writes “Jehovah” where Paul wrote “Lord,” it severs exactly the identification the apostle was making. Its Romans 10:13 becomes a verse about the Father, not the Son. The knee that bows in Philippians no longer bows to Jesus. The Trinitarian force of the apostolic text is systematically erased, 237 times.

When Substitution Replaces Translation

The Witnesses hold particular views on the state of the dead and the fate of the wicked, questions serious students of Scripture do examine from the text. But the NWT’s problem is not that it holds a position; it is that it manipulates vocabulary to force the text to say what the organization already decided, regardless of the Greek and Hebrew.

The word hadēs is rendered throughout as “the Grave,” collapsing a specific term for the realm of the dead into a generic word for physical burial. They are not synonyms in Greek; that is not a translation but a replacement of the word with a different concept that happens to fit the predetermined conclusion. Similarly, gehenna is simply transliterated and left untranslated, deflecting the interpretive question entirely, after which the Watch Tower fills the vacuum with its own answer, which the reader has no textual basis to evaluate, because the translation refused to do the work of translation. This is what makes the NWT distinctively dangerous: it does not reach different conclusions from careful exegesis of the same text, it prevents careful exegesis by swapping biblical vocabulary for Watch Tower vocabulary and presenting the result as the most accurate Bible available. A closed system dressed as a translation.

Colossians 1 — One Word That Makes a Creature

Paul’s Christological hymn in Colossians 1:15-20 presents Jesus as the one through whom all things were created and in whom all things hold together, one of the most exalted portraits of Christ in all Scripture. The NWT renders verses 16-17: by means of him all other things were created… all other things… he is before all other things.

The word “other” appears in no Greek manuscript of this passage, anywhere, in any family, of any date. It is inserted four times. And those four small insertions transform the passage entirely: from a hymn about the Creator into a description of a superior creature, one whom God made first, and through whom He then made “all other things.” That is precisely Watch Tower doctrine, Jesus as the first and greatest of God’s creations, and the NWT inserts the very word that makes the text teach it, where the Greek text teaches the opposite. This is Revelation 22:18 made concrete: adding to the words, and the addition changes who Jesus is.

The Verdict

The New World Translation is not a Bible. It is a Watch Tower theological document, the biblical text systematically rendered into the shape most supportive of Watch Tower doctrine, produced by a secret committee of questionable competence, handed to eight million people as the most faithful Bible available, and used to keep those eight million from ever meeting the Christ of Scripture. The Christ of John 1:1, of Colossians 1, of Philippians 2, of Romans 10, the eternal God made flesh, before all things, by whom all things consist, to whom every knee will bow, is systematically hidden from NWT readers, and a creature is set in His place and called the subject of the New Testament.

For anyone who speaks with Jehovah’s Witnesses, this is the crucial thing to grasp: the NWT cannot serve as shared ground for a real conversation about who Jesus is, because it has been altered precisely to block the conclusions the apostolic text supports. So go to the Greek. Cite the Greek scholars, including the non-Christian ones with no stake in the outcome, and let the actual text speak against the fabricated one placed in these dear people’s hands. They have been given a text with words added. The kindest thing we can do is show them the words that were really written.

That closes the dangerous translations. Tomorrow the series turns to answer the critics, the honest, serious objections raised against everything argued so far.
