The series now turns to its final movements, the canon not as ancient history but as present battlefield. Because the attacks we have traced across the centuries do not fade as the age draws toward its close. They intensify. And Scripture is unmistakably clear about what the final assault will target: not first the church’s buildings or its freedoms, but its confidence in the Word of God.
“And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17).
Watch who the dragon makes war against. Not the theologically careless. Not the doctrinally indifferent. Not the experience-driven or the culturally accommodated. He makes war against the remnant, those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. People of the Word. Because the dragon knows the one thing he cannot ultimately defeat is the Word, and so the people who hold it are the ones he hunts. In the last days, being a person of the Book is not a quiet, safe position. It is the front line.
The Final Battle Is Over Truth
As the age draws to its close, spiritual conflict does not diminish, it increases. Every generation has faced challenges to biblical authority, but the generation standing at the threshold of Christ’s return will face a concentration of deception so severe that Jesus Himself warned: there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect (Matthew 24:24).
The elect will not be deceived, but the rest will be. And the deception will come wrapped in supernatural signs and wonders that make it virtually indistinguishable from the real thing to anyone not anchored in the Word. This is the end-times battlefield: not armored cavalry on a physical plain, but spiritual deception in the hearts and minds of billions. The enemy’s weapon is a counterfeit gospel, sustained by a counterfeit scripture, proclaimed by counterfeit prophets, validated by counterfeit signs. And the only defense against it is a deep, settled, thoroughly grounded confidence in the one true canon of divine Scripture.
The canon is not peripheral to end-times readiness. It is central to it. A church that has lost confidence in its Bible, that has been taught to supplement it with prophetic words, apostolic decrees, and new revelations, is a church defenseless against the final deception. A church that knows its Bible, trusts its Bible, and measures everything by its Bible is a church that will stand.
A Form of Godliness
The New Testament is remarkably specific about the spiritual conditions of the last days, and reading the predictions in the light of our own moment is sobering.
In the last days perilous times shall come, Paul wrote, and then a long catalog of corruption, ending on the most chilling phrase of all: having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Notice what the last-days apostasy is not. It is not atheism. It is not open paganism. It is religious performance without spiritual reality. Churches with worship bands and fog machines but no genuine repentance. Movements with supernatural claims but no transformation. Institutions fluent in theological language but with no fear of God. A form of godliness, the shape, the vocabulary, the atmosphere of faith, while the power that produces holiness is denied and absent.
This is the counterfeit that is hardest to detect, because it does not look like unbelief. It looks like church. And the only instrument precise enough to tell the form from the power is the canon, the Word that discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Itching Ears
Paul then describes the teachers who will fill this apostate church: the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
Itching ears. These are not ears hostile to religion, they are ears that crave religious stimulation on their own terms. They want to be told they are acceptable, that their choices are blessed, that God is bringing them prosperity and power and influence. And they will pay generously for teachers who supply this spiritual entertainment. Such teachers will be available in abundance, because the market demands them and the offering plates reward them.
The canon is the safeguard against itching ears. A church genuinely anchored in the Word, one that preaches the whole counsel of God, that confronts sin as readily as it comforts the broken, that teaches doctrine as well as stirring emotion, will not be popular with the itching-ears crowd. But it will produce genuine disciples who can stand in the day of deception. Popularity and faithfulness are pulling in opposite directions, and they will pull harder as the end draws near.
The Remnant the Dragon Hunts
Revelation gives the most dramatic picture of the end-times conflict over the Word. A great red dragon persecutes the woman, the covenant people of God across the ages, and, unable to destroy her, turns his fury on her offspring: the remnant who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The marks of that remnant are striking. They are not defined by denomination, by charismatic gifts, by cultural relevance, or by numerical size. They are defined by two things: they keep the commandments of God, and they have the testimony of Jesus Christ. People of the Word, both the ethical commands of God and the saving testimony about His Son. Revelation 14:12 describes the same group: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Not the feelings of Jesus. Not the experiences of Jesus. Not emotional impressions. The faith, the body of revealed truth about who He is and what He has done, as delivered in the apostolic Scripture.
In a generation that has largely abandoned both, the commands traded for therapeutic self-affirmation, the testimony traded for therapeutic self-improvement, this remnant stands out precisely because of its commitment to the full biblical revelation. And that commitment is exactly what draws the dragon’s war. He does not trouble himself with those who have already let the Word slip. He hunts the ones who hold it.
The Apostasy Is Already Underway
Paul warned Timothy the apostasy was coming. John warned that the spirit of antichrist was already at work. Jesus warned that false prophets would arise. Two thousand years later, we are not merely awaiting these things, we are witnessing them.
The apostate church of the last days is not a future projection. It is a present reality. It meets in glass-and-steel campuses with Jumbotron screens. It broadcasts on Christian television networks. It fills stadiums for prophetic conferences where self-proclaimed apostles declare the will of God and collect offerings. It publishes bestsellers that reduce the gospel to self-actualization. It ordains leaders who openly contradict the plain teaching of Scripture on sexuality, marriage, and redemption, and calls it expanded hermeneutics.
And the test of whether any movement, church, or leader belongs to the faithful remnant or to the apostate mainstream is always the same: what do they do with the Word? Do they preach it, the whole of it? Do they apply its uncomfortable commands as readily as its comforting promises? Do they test their prophets by it, measure their experiences against it, submit their preferences to it? Or do they mine it selectively for texts that support their agenda while ignoring or reinterpreting the ones that challenge them? The canon is the dividing line. It always has been. And in the last days the division grows starker and the stakes higher than ever before.
The Coming Strong Delusion
There is one more dimension of the end-times deception the faithful must be prepared to face, one most of the evangelical church has not yet taken seriously. Paul warned of a strong delusion that God would send upon those who received not the love of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11), accompanied by power and signs and lying wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9), convincing enough to deceive anyone whose canonical foundations have not been carefully laid.
The groundwork has been laid steadily over decades, through cultural conditioning, institutional credibility, and the slow normalization of ideas that would have been dismissed as fantasy a generation ago. The direction of travel is unmistakable: the world is being prepared to accept a framework about the nature of reality, about who we are, where we came from, and what the universe actually is, that will make the biblical account appear not merely outdated but actively false. It will not arrive as open persecution of the faith. It will arrive as enlightenment. As discovery. As the moment humanity finally grows up and leaves its ancient religious assumptions behind.
The believers who stand in that hour will not be those with the most sophisticated apologetics or the most culturally fluent theology. They will be those who know what Scripture says, about God, about creation, about the nature and purpose of the world He made, and about the spiritual powers that have worked since the Garden to pull humanity away from the Word. The canon, received in its fullness and trusted without apology, is the defense.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
